Fruits of the Spirit – Peace

Hello everyone I know it’s getting close to the end of the semester and I know we can’t wait to take that last exam. Trust me, I feel your pain.

Don’t get too stressed because the peace and grace of the Lord will be upon you.

As we can see our word of the month today is about PEACE.

First, what is peace? Peace means being free from disturbance. Why did I pick this topic you ask? I had a dream about 3months ago in which this word kept ringing in my head with a Bible passage, 2 Thessalonians 3:16. But I’ll come back to the Bible verse later.

First, let’s look at a different verse, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 NKJV‬‬

The last couple of years have been a struggle for me mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Being a student can take a toll on some of us, and I was in that boat. Last year was a struggle for me Academically and, as an African kid, you always want to make your parents proud when it comes to education. It was a lot of pressure. Mentally, I was done with school because it felt like I wasn’t moving forward at all. I was in a community college for about 2.5 years and during the semester I was scheduled to graduate, my advisor told me I was missing 3 required classes. I was really confused because I had spoken to another advisor and he said I was good to graduate. I discovered that the initial advisor overlooked certain sections in my program requirements and this lead him to advise me in error.

I got really angry and as a Momma’s boy, I called my Mom. I explained everything thing to her, and as a typical mother would, she advised me on the next steps, in this case, registering for summer school. Before she got off the phone, she said something in my native tongue (Igbo) to me and this phrase stood out “Wéta obigí” it means “PEACE” (Literally: Calm your heart). After that everything was good. To cut the story short I graduated, transferred school, and the rest was history.

Now let’s look at an example from the Bible;

35.“On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side. 36.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that it was already filling. 38. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39. Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41. And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

‭‭Mark‬ ‭4:35-41‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

We all know this story, so I’ll try and keep this short and simple. Here we have Jesus and He is trying to travel to the other side of the sea; all of a sudden a heavy windstorm starts and Christ’s disciples begin to freak out,  shouting for their lives and Jesus is chilling, enjoying His sleep. So His disciples woke Him up and asked “Teacher do you not care if we perish”, so He just got up, spoke to the sea and guess what, it became calm (PEACE). I pray that whatever storm keeping you down or making you scared becomes silenced in the name of Jesus. Amen

Now let’s dive into the Bible verse that made me choose this topic;

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.”

‭‭II Thessalonians‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NKJV

This Bible verse speaks to me in a very different way. You’d ask How or Why? Well here’s the reason. I was struggling with a specific situation in my life last year. This situation left me feeling very uneasy because I never envisioned myself in that type of problem. However, when I had this dream and received this verse, everything just felt easy and relaxing for me because I felt like I was trying too hard. I told myself that to find peace in every way, I had to ask Christ for forgiveness, receive His peace and move on from it. After that, my outlook changed, I’ve been doing good and I haven’t been stressing over anything. All thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ.

The God we serve is peace Himself and if we are like Him we should also enjoy peace but you will say I am not God but you are a god to be like Him. Allow the Lord’s peace to rule and watch things change. Why struggle when you can just enjoy His peace and you have no cause to worry.

Exodus 14:14 says the Lord will fight for you and you will hold your peace. Inviting God into every situation is the passcode to eradicate anxiety and worry. We even spend so much energy being anxious. We have panic attacks or even anxiety attacks but,  His perfect peace reverses all these. He showed peace in every way in the Bible

Some Biblical Examples of God’s Peace changing situations:

  • The woman with the issue of blood just touched the hem of His garment and she had was healed and peace followed
  • Blind Bartimaeus beckoned for the restoration of his sight while Jesus was passing,  Jesus heard and touched his eyes – that was great peace for him.
  • He raised Lazarus from the dead even after he was decayed and the sisters said if he came earlier their brother wouldn’t have died and now he stinks. Jesus raising him from the dead brought great peace to their heart and, their mourning turned to rejoicing.
  • The widow of Nain lost her son and she was pretty much inconsolable of the situation but Jesus came and raised him back to life – I can imagine the joy in her heart as I have lost a brother and would have been so elated if he came back to life. That’s peace right there.
  • How can I forget His first miracle of turning water into wine. That was a great relief for the wedding couple. I will be agitated if I have a lot of guests and nothing to quench their thirst.

So having all-round peace only comes from God. Embrace His peace and get total fulfillment.
